'A Coupling' is a sculpture from artist Kumbirai Makumbe's 'The Figments' (2021) sculptural series. The item was sculpted in clay, 3D scanned, manipulated digitally, 3D printed and finished by hand. Within this process, it examines the absence of one’s physicality, paralleling to what’s lost in our endeavours for progress.

Being the artist's most extensive sculptural works to date, it is part of a series of material manifestations of digital entities from 'Living Doesn’t Mean You’re Alive' (2021), an audio-visual work by the artist at 'Control the Virus Vol 03' online exhibition. The website work interrogates the emotional aspects of a human’s emancipation from their body and their ascension into an informorph; a virtual body of information that possesses self-awareness and sentience. The sculpture is a physical and material embodiment of virtual entities from the work, which also explores the liminal space and questions what is lost and gained in the process of translation of matter between the digital and the physical.
